Sturgis Firefighter Facing Criminal Sexual Conduct Charges

Earlier this week, a Sturgis firefighter was arrested on charges that he allegedly had an inappropriate and illegal sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl. According to a report by one local news source, the 36-year-old firefighter is facing one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Apparently, the man was seen inappropriately hugging the girl in public by police and firefighters, which triggered a more in-depth investigation. He was also seen riding around with her in his car while his family was out of town. Allegedly, the firefighter carried on a sexual relationship with the girl before her 16th birthday.

The man is on unpaid leave until an internal investigation is completed.

Criminal Sexual Conduct in Michigan In Michigan, the crime of criminal sexual conduct consists of unlawful and unconsented-to sexual contact between the defendant and another person. The crime can range in severity from criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree to criminal sexual conduct in the first degree.

Regardless of the degree of the offense, the consequences of a conviction for criminal sexual conduct can be devastating for anyone and may include substantial fines as well as a lengthy prison sentence. However, in many cases, the evidence against the accused is weak and consists of little more than one person’s word against the defendant’s word.

In these cases, a skilled Michigan defense attorney is critical because it may mean the difference between an acquittal and a conviction. Even in cases where a conviction is likely, due to overwhelming evidence of guilt or a confession, an attorney can still help an unwary defendant navigate the criminal justice system with hopes of getting leniency from the judge or prosecutor. In cases that must be taken to trial because leniency is not offered, a criminal defense attorney will be your best ally in your fight for your freedom.
